My name is Nancy Louise Collins-Everson, and I was born in Skanee, Michigan on July 10th, 1939, which makes me 71. I grew up on a farm with eight brothers and sisters, me being the 2nd to the oldest. I did what all kids did on farms in those days: I milked the cows, rode horses, fed the animals, and I really enjoyed playing with the animals too. When I was about 15 years old a friend introduced me to Ronald Everson, who I grew to love, and married three years later at the Methodist Church in L’Anse, Michigan. Ron was in the army, and later becoming a truck driver, while I worked at the Baraga County Memorial Hospital for many years, straight out of high school. I had the first of my three beautiful children at the age of 19, and am now the grandmother of eight, and the great-grandmother of two. In June 2008, I was diagnosed with colon cancer. That same summer I went through radiology and chemotherapy, later on having surgery. My cancer is gone now, but it still takes a toll on me. I guess you could say I’m a fighter. I may be small, but I’m a very strong woman and I love my family more than anything. I have a heart of gold and I hope that I set good examples for my children, and theirs, to look up to.
