My great-great uncle, Bill Mattila, was in World War II. When the war was over he was tired of looking for a job in the city, so he went to Brockway Mountain in Copper Harbor to live off the land. He built a cabin on the hill, and he lived there for over 32 years. In the summer he fed up to seven bears at a time and walked two hours to the store for supplies. He spent winters listening to his radio. All of his dogs’ names were Bark and his cats’ names were Meow. He loved the outdoors. He was born on July 18, 1914 and died on January 2, 1985.
